Patriot Act

Post  Guest on Thu Oct 30, 2008 10:33 pm

The Patriot Act was passed in 2001 a little over a month after 9/11. It gave broad authority to domestic law enforcement agencies to gather electronic data from domestic and international sources.

Is this act a necessary evil in the age we live in? Does it giving the necessary tools to our law enforcement so they can prevent another 9/11?

Or are they unnecessary violations of our civil liberties?

Here is the actual bill http://www.thomas.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c107:6:./temp/~mdbsrXkzn5::

It is very complicated and hard to understand so here is a some what clearer but still comprehensive brief on the act from the Congressional Research Service.
