Desires or Needs?

Post  Angel on Tue Sep 23, 2008 7:48 pm

In Philippians 4:19 it says, "And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs."

Now, in a Theology class I'm in, we were dicussing what needs God supplies us, and when we are just asking for our desires. When that verse says that He will supply all our needs, how far does that go? We have seen many people (including missionaries) die from thirst, hunger, and lack of oxygen. Wait though, shouldn't God supply our needs? So aren't improtant things like water, food and air needs in our life? We need them to survive.
Of course, you don't need that Porche that you've always wanted, that, is a desire. We sometimes have a hard time separating the two; what are our needs, and how do we tell those apart from our desires (things that we just want, and don't need)? Sometimes, we just feel hungry, so we want (desire) food, but we don't actually need it at that moment.

What does this passage mean by He shall supply all our needs? And how do we tell our needs apart from our desires?

p.s.
If Biblical debates go somewhere else, I apoligize.

Desires and needs...?

I don't know!

Something to think about, I guess.

It's not an easy question. No one in my class could really put their finger on it. I just wanted to see what ya'll thought about it.

What does this passage mean by He shall supply all our needs? And how do we tell our needs apart from our desires?

In regard to this, It also says in a different translation of Philippians 4:19:
And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
God knows what are needs are and he satisfies them through Jesus. If we are experiencing hunger, our needs might be that we are not close to God. He uses cercumstances and suffering to adress the real needs.

It also says in Romans 8:17
Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

God may give death to those who have needs. He may also bring suffering, however, we know that when we experience these things, it will bring us closer to God, and it will help us in our spiritual needs.

Sometimes God might cure our momentary needs, but isn't it better to have the things that will last forever?

Indeed it is. Very good point. God takes care of our needs when He sees fit. So instead of focusing on what we want or need, we rely on God's judgement. That's a good point, I definitely agree.

*sigh* We've moved onto a different topic in Theology, but I'd still like to continue it here.

When is it justified to ask God for something? I mean, it is His decision, but he says that we should rely on Him and pray to Him when we have needs. When is that? We have to have some way of descerning. Think about it; if a none believer asks you, "So, I trusted in God, that He would give me food this month so I wouldn't starve, but I didn't get any. I thought God supplied for my needs, isn't that true?" how would you reply?

I am not sure how I would respond to an unbeliever, however the bible is specific on how a believer should act. Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5: 12-18:

Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

We are supposed to be joyful in all circumstances, that is why unbelievers usually don't have hope, they have no one to lean on. I would not know how to respond, but I think the words to believers bring hope. If you have any ideas I would appreciate them though...

Ah yes, and that is my favorite verse. Very good. I definitely agree.

You bring up a very reasonable concern; how do you explain these sorts of issues with non-believers? As you said, they have no hope, they have no one to lean on. If someone asked me about this sort of situation, I'd use it as an opportunity to share my faith. I can explain how I get through hard times when I don't have what I 'need'. I can explain that the Lord gives you what you need and that He has a plan for our lives. Now, I haven't actually been in a situation where I have not had something I need, but I can explain why I am not afraid of that situation because of my faith.
In essence; they do have hope. Through Christ. They are in a bad situation now, but not after they accept Christ.
