Should flag burning be illegal? Is it a defilement of a symbol of our country or is it a freedom that should be protected?

Well, burning is the proper way to dispose of an old, worn-out flag.

It's just that most people burn them to show disrespect. If that is their choice, then I'm not going to risk my life to stop them.

I don't think it is right to do it in protest. The government of the USA is such that we can petition our government (or should be able to, anyway).

Don't we also have the right to protest if we choose? And why can't that protest take the form of flag burning?

Do not forget that the flag of the United States represents the republic of the United States. If you dislike it that much and attempt to show disrespect to your freedoms, you should not have the freedom or right to protest.

So wait if I'm really upset with what the government of America is doing and I try to protest then I lose my right to protest? Where in the Constitution do you get that?

You are protesting and destroying the symbol of your freedom. If you dispose of that symbol, you are symbolically "burning" your right to protest.

So I don't have the freedom to burn the symbol of freedom? And I'll ask again where in the Constitution do you find that?

I said it was symbolism.

You have that freedom once. Once you burn your symbol of freedom, you have none left. No one forced you to destroy it. You used your freedom to destroy the symbol of your freedom! That is not in the Constitution: it is common sense.

So once someone burns the American flag then they should never be allowed to protest again?

Well, a foreigner should not need to burn the American flag. What is it doing to him?

Yes. Symbolism is very important. If one burns the symbol of his freedom, he has then symbolically burned his freedom. It is a logical conclusion.

Well the first thing that comes to mind is invading his country or intervening in his country. America does a lot to other countries.

Symbolically maybe he has burned the symbol of freedom but that doesn't mean he's stripped of his rights and freedoms. I mean just because we might find the protest offensive doesn't mean it should be outlawed. I mean would you make protesting for pro-choice illegal? Or would you be very happy if protesting abortion was made illegal because some people find it offensive?

People still have their freedoms, even if they violate them. They have mercy. However, some violations do lead to jail or other, worse sentences. But you can't "Burn your Freedom". Every person upon birth gains Human Rights.
